INTRODUCTION

The study of the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs, ie. “what the patient does to the drug”.

• Often explains inter-patient variability in therapeutic response.

• Enables drug regimens to be tailored for individual patients, while minimising treatment failures and adverse effects.

• Particularly valuable for:-

(a) Drugs showing a close correlation between effects and plasma concentration.

(b) Drugs with a narrow margin between toxic and therapeutic effects (eg. Digoxin, Gentamicin).
